February 10, 2009Volcanos in Alaska
January 30, 2009Geologists are keeping an eye on a volcano in Alaska. It’s Mount Redoubt and they think it may erupt soon. The last time it did was over a five-month stretch in 1989-1990 –>
Freeway Closed
January 24, 2009The next two weekends will see the All American Freeway under the Morganton Road bridge closed between 10 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday so heavy equipment can be brought in and chunks of the bridge removed.
Freeway traffic can still get to points north of Morganton. It’ll be detoured up the off ramp and down the on ramp. But they’re stop light-controlled, so traffic will be backed up. Best to go another way.
Judges on TV
January 18, 2009
I’m not sure we have enough TV judges appearing on the local airwaves.
For the lead item in today’s column, I perused the Observer’s TV listings and saw that a mere 12 different TV judge shows air on the television channels in the region each weekday.
And they occupy just 23 hours of daily programming. (Since most of the shows are 30 minutes long, you can tell that some of the TV judges are on several times a day — and on various channels.)
Wow! Until now, I hadn’t realized the extent of TV judgedom.
Today’s column notes that TV judges aren’t analogous with real judges — though many viewers may think they are. Not all of them have experience as real judges, either. But most do seem to have real law degrees.
Legal commentators think TV judge shows are eroding our view of, respect for and knowledge about how the real legal system does and should work. Go here and here to read a couple of articles on that subject.
But doggone it, TV judge shows are entertaining — to some. Or, uh, judging by the proliferation of the shows, to a lot of people.
Below: A rogue’s gallery of the TV judges now on our airwaves, plus one who was just pretending to be a real TV judge. Can you pick that person? If you can, click on the pic to go to a video spoof of a TV judge show.
To A New Year!!
January 8, 2009I wish everyone a very happy prosperous new year! May it be your year of happiness! I don’t do resolutions, I am more of the type to just try your best all the time. I like to work on strengths. I wish you all the luck, if you do.
I wanted to offer my $.02 for the new year for happiness. My guide to happiness, LOL.
1) Live like you are dying. Unfortunately, I have been on my death bed. We are not promised tomorrow. Tell your friends and loved ones what they mean to you now, while you have the chance. Live each day to the fullest. We can never get back lost time. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Do what you would love to do while you are able. Go for it!
2) Dreams. You are never to young or to old to chase them. They make take time, but it doesn’t hurt to go for them! You must first believe to succeed!
3) Friendships. Friends are such a wonderful gift! Cherish and water each one. It’s the best investment you can ever make. Nothing brings larger dividends!
4)Volunteer. It’s not when you were born, or when you die that people remember- it’s what you do in between. Find something with your interest, it can fulfill your life more than you could ever imagine. Your problems will seem so much smaller, and it will bring you true happiness.
5)Happiness within. I believe true happiness comes within. We are all human and can disappoint. We can’t live up to others standards they may have of us, we get busy, and all fall short. I think serving others is a great way to get it. If you depend on others for your happiness, you may get disheartened.
6)Stumbling. We all stumble and get hit with hard things. It’s all how you look at it, and temporary. Even if you have the worst diagnoses, you can use it to help others and make a difference. There is light and the end of the tunnel, and worrying won‘t change a thing. If you are sick, keep a journal for your children. Best gift they can ever get.
7) Smile. I have found myself at the store in my own little world, and someone will smile at me, and it catches on. I can’t help but smile back!
8)Bring out the best in others. If you do, you are sure to get more in return. You will feel great also.
9) Laugh. Laughter is the best medicine for anything! A good laugh will brighten any day.
I want to thank you all for reading! I wanted to take a moment and thank my family, special friends-my angels, the Town of Spring Lake, my sponsors for sports- you truly make a difference in these kids lives, and to my church family- you mean the world to me.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Baseball in Spring Lake
December 27, 2008Registration for Spring Lake baseball, softball, and T-ball begins December 29th. Registration is at the community center Mondays- Saturdays. Ages are as of April 30th, 2009 and are from 4yrs to 14yrs. Don’t miss out on getting your child on a team, register early.
The first coaches meeting is January 7th at 6pm, and will be held at the community center. It takes many coaches for a team to successfully work. I am going to coach a rookie team, which it helps if you have at least 4 assistants. I am going to also coach the T-ball team I have had for a few years, and it takes three assistants to run really smooth. So, if you don’t mind throwing a ball to a child, standing by base, or helping the players learn to bat- come to the meeting. Coaching sure has it’s own rewards. Watching a child hit their first ball, get a homer, or making their first run is awesome. Not to mention all the hugs and high fives as they get to know you. You don’t have to know it all, just be willing to help children grow and learn. The coaches are very appreciative of all the help they receive.

A Little something to think about…
December 14, 2008Have you ever had one of those days when it seemed like everyone and everything was an irritant?
Lately this has been my mood. And everyday unbeknownst to those arround me I say a prayer, “Dear Lord, continue to do a work in me, strengthen me in areas I am weak, allow me to learn lessons the first go-round. And Lord, if this situation that I am in is to humble me, let it happen or at least give me the wisdom in this transition…oh, yeah, help me to hold my tongue and please limit the sharp expressions that come across my face.Thank you. I love you!”
I say that prayer a few times a day…in between sighs and a few shifts of the eyes, oh, and a few nail taps to signify “I am so not feeling this!”
It seems of all the lessons I have encountered in 20-something years the one that seems to greet me at each level is the lesson of humility. No matter where I go or where I think I have arrived in life there’s the lesson knocking me right back in place. It’s like bad breath, sometimes it just sneaks up on you.
The latest lesson of humility came to remind me that I am not exempt from learning or stetching beyond my expectations…what a shock to my ego and comfort zone…So many times we want to be masters of certain areas…well right as I began to reign I was knocked back down to a student. (talk about humbling yourself) I went from no real worries or cares because I had the answers to dumb-dumb ditty land without a clue or friend.
I felt like Martin when he said, “Damn Gina!” or Florida Evans when James died and she said, “Damn! Damn! Damn!” Yes, I was clueless and a bit fearful. To start again from the bottom and take on new challenges was a lot to ask, especially when I was beginning to reign. I was feeling myself and that’s where the problem lied.
In this 20-something body there is a LOT of pride…day by day I am starting to recognize and correct that. I don’t always ask for help. I don’t always appear teachable, despite verbally admitting, “I don’t understand” but my body language, as I’m learning, screams, “Don’t bother me. I’m doing the best that I can. I got this.”
I am learning to humble myself and it isn’t easy. I don’t know everything and that’s fine. I don’t always ask for help and I have to change. I was once told that one of the signs of maturity is knowing when to ask for help. I have to work on my facial expressions and try to be more warm and inviting to change instead of shutting down.
Humility, we meet again and this time I am listening, ready to learn and apply the lesson at this level in my life,
